“Guys only want one thing.”

I bet you hear that a lot from your parents, relatives, and society. This sentence, or phrase always seems to get me. It’s said that the “one thing” guys want is “stuff”. “Stuff” meaning, sex or anything around that ball park. For some, this may be true. For some, it may not be. And for others it may just be a normal part of a relationship.

This phrase probably originated from parents who didn’t want their teens having sex, or wanted them to stay away from boys. Or it may have come from someone who got their heartbroken, and that was the only conclusion they could come to as to what happened. But the people who say things like “Guys only want one thing.” probably have never considered that the girl also wants this. They probably never took the time to think that maybe the girl is just as interested in that “one thing” as the guy.

This phrase insinuates that guys aren’t interested in you for you, or like you for who you are. But that they just like what’s inside your pants. It also leads people to believe that teenage males aren’t capable of real feelings for someone, and love for that matter. It’s quite stereotypical, and wrong.

Then parents also like to say “I was a teenager once, I know how boys think”. Yes, maybe you do. But you can’t sit there and tell me you never loved a girl while in high school or college. You can’t. But they might say “I thought I knew what love was, but I didn’t.” Wrong. You did. Teenage love is the best kind, and it’s even better when it doesn’t just remain teenage love. Another thing is, some people who’ve used this phrase on their kids are married or with their high school sweetheart. Oh, but you guys don’t love each other right?

A lot of people who enjoy using this on their kids are contradicting themselves. And no, I’m not saying that there aren’t some guys that do only want one thing. I’m just saying it’s not all of them.
